The Grande-Dame of the Alps, the high-altitude resort of Alpe d'Huez has many claims to fame: it was where the beloved button-lift system was first invented. It was one of the first villages in France to welcome skiers (as early as 1904), and finally, it is a reputable stop of the Tour de France. Alpe d'Huez has recently agreed on a 350 million euro investment to link the resort with Les Deux Alpes, thereby creating the third-largest ski domain with 450 km of pistes by 2020.

The 350 million euro investment led by the municipal government, was announced in 2016 to bring the resort up to the high standards of its increasingly wealthy visitors. Key features of the holistic face-lift have included the resurfacing of roads, re-roofing of flat buildings into sloping alpine chalets, underground parking, and the development of new districts. For skiers, one of the crucial cornerstones of the project is the plan to connect Alpe d'Huez with Les Deux Alpes by 2021 via gondola, totaling a mind-blowing 475 km of ski terrain to beat Val d'Isere and Tignes' Espace Killy, and positioning it as the third largest domain in the world!
